I built this off the tiled plans available from FliteTest.com. Managed to find a cheap source of paper-coated foam board at Jacksons Drawing Supplies - $9.45 per sheet (1020x815x5 or 3) and had the thing cut and built in a couple of long evenings.
FT call for an 810kV motor and 30A ESC ---- just happens I had a Hobbyking Donkey 3511 Combo complete with 30A ESC in the spares box - these combo's go for about $14 bucks and are hard to beat at that price.

Set it up with a 10x4.7 slow fly prop , used HXT900 servos and linkage stops and while at it, set it up for flaps. Did a basic setup on the Taranis for about 30% expo , set the flaps on a slider and dialed in a bit of Aileron / Rudder mix to start (15% -more about this later) and set up the COG at the 2"/50mm position indicated.

Took it out yesterday and had a job controlling it , with a tendency to climb and wallow in the turns which I managed to sort after a fashion with elevator trim. Given I'm not that flash a pilot , it still went well but eventually ended in a fairly decent prang and subsequent cartwheel. But the thing is tough - a bit of damage to the wingtips and the motor mount.
Easily repaired by trimming about 25mm off the tips and while at it , I went over all the servo throws and moved the COG further forward as well as replacing the bamboo skewer wing mounts. motor retainers and tailskid with 3mm carbon tube. Also put the Swiss markings on it with red craft paper - canopy markings to come later.

Back out to the lakes today and a totally different flying experience - much more stable , and after moving the COG even further forward and increasing the Aileron pairing with the Rudder to 50% , very nice and quite docile but still responsive. It takes off easily on about 30% throttle ( 3S 2200 ) and crawls around on practically nothing and with about 22 degrees flap will descend very steeply or just hover into wind. Even taxiing has to be done carefully as it gets airborne very quickly.

It probably owes me about $60 , discounting time spent , and if I break it it really is just a matter of cutting some new bits . This is a Josh Bixler design and it really works. I'll be making more of these. :)

"I taught you to fly and this is what I get??!!" " Put my wing back on you b-----d!" " I'll show your little Swiss friend a thing or two."

FliteTest have really come up with a great idea here! Easy, cheap planes that you're not going to worry about too much and can simply repeat once you have the drawings.
Going to do a couple of mods to the landing gear when I'm back on the 8th , just to make it a bit more durable.
The bamboo skewers are best replaced with something a bit more substantial , particularly for the wing mounts.
But these guys have designed for absolute minimum budget and they've been brilliantly successful in doing so. Any enhancement is a bonus.

Storchy had a little prang! -- Operator error -ground acquired! I'll get around to making some new bits, eventually.

But on a positive note :- My Durafly Storch has been sorted and tamed and flies really nicely 🙂
